Emma Churchman: The Deep End of Hope in the Wake of Hurricane Helene - 40 Days and Nights of Survival and Transformation
The MS in Applied Climate Studies at Warren Wilson presents an ongoing series: "Recovery, Re-thinking, and Rebuilding Post-Helene." In this month's featured event, we will join trauma recovery expert and bestselling author Emma M. Churchman, MDiv for a powerful hour exploring survival, resilience, and transformation through the lens of Hurricane Helene's devastating impact on Gerton, NC. Drawing from her groundbreaking book 'The Deep End of Hope in the Wake of Hurricane Helene,' Churchman guides participants through the four phases of trauma recovery - Rescue, Recovery, Reconstruction, and Evolution - as experienced during the catastrophic storm event.
Through vivid storytelling and practical instruction, she'll share how a community navigated from immediate crisis through profound transformation, while equipping participants with quick, effective techniques for managing their own trauma responses. Using tools like the 5-4-3-2-1 Senses Inventory and the 90-Second Reset, attendees will learn practical skills for trauma recovery while witnessing the powerful story of a community's journey from survival to evolution in the wake of unprecedented disaster.
With over 25 years of experience as a spiritual and business leader, Emma Churchman has guided thousands through the labyrinth of trauma to reclaim hope and strength. Her powerful work as a nationally certified trauma chaplain and mentor is rooted in her own journey of overcoming acute childhood adversity.
